History
The Northeast
District of NANBPWC, Inc. is a not-for-profit community service
organization comprised of the states of Connecticut,
Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Northern New Jersey, New York, Rhode
Island, Vermont and the island of Bermuda.
It is the largest of the seven districts that make up the national association,
and it was organized in 1959.
The forty
clubs in our District have been engaged in a variety of community service
projects over the years including mentoring, voter registration drives,
health screenings, adopt-a-school programs, Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation,
domestic violence, blood drives, career fairs and working with senior citizens.
Clubs also provide financial support to the United
Negro College Fund and the District offers a scholarship for female
undergraduate students age twenty-five and over.
The members
of the Northeast District encourage interest in culture and the arts. Each
December the District hosts the Showcase of Vocal
Artists at Carnegie Hall where we feature the talents of young vocalists
pursuing careers in classical music. On the international front we
have opened a health care facility in the
Village of Apatrapa in Ghana, West Africa, and have provided support in
Benin, Nigeria and Tanzania, just to name a few. We have given monetary
donations and have sponsored programs that have helped to improve the economic
conditions for our brothers and sisters in the Motherland.
Northeast
District membership meetings are held in September, November, January,
March and May. Each June, the District hosts a conference. Past conference
sites include Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Bermuda
and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. At each conference District
members come together and have the opportunity to conduct District business,
participate in professional growth and development workshops and network
with one another.
The members
of The Northeast District of the National Association of Negro Business
and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. are committed to improving the local
community and society at large.
